The movie plot is similar to that of the highly rated episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) " The Measure of a Man" (1989, episode 209). The episode is centered on a court hearing called to determine if the android Lt. Cmdr. Data is the property of Star Fleet or rather an individual with the rights to make his own decisions. Patrick Meighan (Morgan Freeman)'s closing remarks in defense of Ted are similar to the main argument presented by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in defense of Data with both using three pillars to determine sentience.
