The general plot and setting of this movie had already been planned for years, as the head of the Bionicle story team, Bob Thompson was always interested in doing a prequel to the original Bionicle story-line. In 2003, Bionicle comic book author Greg Farshtey compiled a list of complaints from the Bionicle fans on the BZPower.com forums, who were bored of the story's repetitiveness. Hence, it was decided that the prequel story would be told in 2004 to shake things up. Ironically, many fans who had liked the previous story-lines and setting found this shift too jarring, and abandoned the franchise, not knowing that it had been planned anyway.
