According to the special features and commentary, two species of hominids are in the movie, Homo-sapiens and Neanderthals. Naoh and Ika are Homo-sapiens, though the director's commentary states that Ika's people are "more evolved". The Ape-like creatures represent Neanderthals. Using the shooting locations as a reference, Naoh is from Scotland, Ika is from Kenya, and the Neanderthals are from Germany.
