Although its story is set in the U.S. state of North Carolina, much of this film was made elsewhere, especially in Romania (at studios in Bucharest and on location in the Carpathian Mountains), with some scenes filmed in the states of Virginia and South Carolina, USA. Casting was also international, including actors from the United States and the United Kingdom in principal roles with background players of diverse nationalities. Behind the camera, as well, British, American, Australian, Romanian and other nationalities are represented.
