Robert Rodriguez operated the camera himself using a zoom lens. He would frequently zoom in during takes to make it appear as it were more camera set-ups, a technique he had developed while filming El Mariachi, suonatore di chitarra (1992). This is how the many jump cuts into extreme close-ups on actor's faces were filmed.
