On the cast and crew commentary for the first season, Michael Chiklis explains that his mother was very disappointed with him upon watching the pilot and wrote him "a four-page letter wondering if (he) was doing this at the expense of (his) immortal soul". However, upon watching the rest of the first season, she came away with a different opinion, considering it her son's best work and fully understanding the character Chiklis was playing.
