Many people think that the film is unrealistic in its portrayal of how the police would have acted if a "home alone" incident did occur. The writers and directors had actually consulted with a local police officer Jeff Jefferson and co wrote all police scenes with him. The writers and directors were confident with their plan and confused with the audience reaction. 5 years later Jeff Jefferson was himself arrested for child neglect having left his own children alone for the previous 6 years.
