Agatha Christie was inspired to write the film's source novel while on an extended 1937 Egyptian vacation, and the hotel scenes in ''Death on the Nile'' were shot at the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan where Christie stayed. It was necessary for the hotel's frontage to be "redressed" to appear more emphatically 1930's, and for the furniture on the hotel's terrace to be replaced with specially made period-authentic pieces.
