There is considerable debate whether Ripley's suggestion to quarantine Kane for 24 hours would have helped. The Facehugger crawled off of him after several hours and died anyway; and then Kane was alive some more hours later, just to have the Alien explode out of him. All of that would also have happened if they quarantined him as well, but the isolated Alien might not have escaped to other parts of the ship so easily, where it could stalk and kill the crew. Others say that the Alien would have grown and broken out of quarantine eventually, so it wouldn't have mattered. Some fans claim that Parker's suggestion to "freeze" Kane for the ride home until the doctors and scientists on Earth could fix the situation back home might have helped. The Alien would have been frozen along with Kane, and both might not have survived the ride home which might have killed off the Alien, stopping him from endangering the crew and everyone else. Even if they did survive the ride home, it's possible the scientists on Earth could have dealt more effectively with the monster that was hatched than the crew of the Nostromo did.
