Initially, Jon Favareau expressed frustration in numerous interviews with the fans calling the child "Baby Yoda". However, the reasons fans took to calling the child "Baby Yoda" was because of the secrecy surrounding the character to avoid spoilers. They called it "Baby Yoda" because 1: Fans were theorizing early on that the child was possibly some kind of reincarnation of Yoda (Despite the fact that Yoda appears as a Force Ghost in The Last Jedi). 2: In the entire canon of the Star Wars Universe, The name of Yoda's species has never been established. So, the child couldn't be identified by its race (Example: like calling an infant alien "Baby Wookiee" or "Baby Calamarian" or "Baby Hutt") 3. The baby's name of Grogu would not be established until Season Two. So, fans felt they had to give it some kind of identity, and thus the misidentifying name was born.
