The scenes involving Jerry Frick's wives were inspired by stories that Paul Thomas Anderson's step-mother-in-law, Kimiko Rudolph, told him in regards to the casual racism she faced as a young woman. Frick's second wife shares the same first name with Kimiko, and the real-life Kimiko appears in the Jack Holden restaurant scene, alongside her husband Richard Rudolph and many of their grandchildren.
