Safran called The Suicide Squad a "gritty 1970s war movie combined with the brilliance of James Gunn's characters and comedy", while Gunn said it was the superhero version of The Dirty Dozen (1967). Gunn also cited The Great Escape (1963), Where Eagles Dare (1968), and Kelly's Heroes (1970) as influences, and the movie poster is patterned after the poster designs for those movies. The 1980s buddy movie genre may also have been a source of inspiration, especially Arma letale (1987), where a down-to-Earth character (like Bloodsport or Rick Flag) is involuntarily coupled with a reckless and potentially deranged partner (most of the others). The scene where Harley is tortured by electrocution, fakes unconsciousness and then continues to strangle her tormentor with her legs seems like a direct homage to a similar scene featuring Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon.
