Patricia's diary refers to Three Mothers: Mother Suspiriorum (mother of sighs), Mother Tenebrarum (mother of darkness) and Mother Lacrimarum (mother of tears). These are the three witches from Dario Argento's "Three Mothers" trilogy, with each witch appearing in an installment (Suspiriorum in the original Suspiria (1977); Tenebrarum in Inferno (1980), and Lacrimarum in La terza madre (2007)). The masks seen in Susie's nightmares were originally going to play a part in the narrative: during the black sabbath scene, three women would be seen wearing masks, apparently representing the Three Mothers referenced in Patricia's diary. The woman wearing the mask representing Mother Suspiriorum, would take it off and hand it to Susie after she revealed herself as the true mother. You can still see remnants of this concept in the form of three long dresses made of human hair in the black sabbath scene.
