James Eckhouse and Carol Potter (parental figures and disciplinarians Jim and Cindy Walsh who offered advice not only to their own children, Brandon and Brenda Walsh, but occasionally to their children's friends) decided not to renew their five-year contracts. This was due to Jim and Cindy gradually being reduced to background characters that served little to no purpose, as Brandon and the gang were growing up and becoming independent. According to the graduation (final) episode of the third season, the teen characters were 20 years old by the end of the fifth season, making James and Carol's resignations at the end of that season, symbolic of the now-adult characters no longer in need of parental guidance.
