Johnny Depp was praised by critics and audiences alike. Some saw this as Depp coming back to form and going back to his roots in many ways, especially after appearing in various big budget blockbusters that had some people wonder if he would ever do another film remincient of the days before he made blockbuster films. Because of his menacing performance, many people believed Depp deserved an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Bulger, along with other award nominations, and were surprised when his name was left off the list of nominees. Some believe it was because Depp commented that he didn't want to win an Oscar if nominated for one. Depp was nominated for the SAG Award for Best Actor and won the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The latter award, which up until the 2015 award season, had been an indicator as to who would win the Oscar for Best Actor since the award was given out. The years following Depps win, the Desert Palm went to the actors who would later go on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
