Karen Austin was originally cast as court clerk Lana Wagner for the first ten episodes of season one in 1984. Lana was to become the romantic foil for Harry Stone and Dan Fielding's characters. Yet it became apparent during taping of the season that Wagner was suffering from Bell's palsy. Series producers, realizing that it was affecting her performance, decided to let her out of her contract after episode ten. The three remaining episodes of the season had guest stars playing the court clerk character, although Austin was still billed in the opening credits. At the beginning of season two, in the fall of 1984, Charles Robinson was cast to play Mac Robinson the new court clerk which he would play for the shows next eight seasons, from 1984 to 1992. The public defender role played by Ellen Foley, and later Markie Post, would become the romantic foil for the Harry Stone and Dan Fielding characters.
