Production halted during the eighth season after Charlie Sheen publicly made disparaging remarks about CBS and Chuck Lorre. Only 16 episodes were produced that season, instead of the usual 22 to 24. CBS and Warner Bros. terminated Sheen's contract. Ashton Kutcher replaced him in the ninth season.
