Seppuku is seen in the film. This was the ritual suicide of a shamed or defeated samurai. The samurai would kneel, and slice open their abdomen (usually with their short sword; tanto), while a second (generally someone the samurai respected whether friend or foe), would then behead them to ensure a swift death. While seppuku is the correct term, the practice is also informally referred to as hara-kiri, which literally translates to 'belly-cut'.
