The decision to make Darth Vader Luke's father had a dramatic effect on the franchise: it later turned him into a redeemable character (with the Emperor becoming the main antagonist of the saga). It also provided the springboard for the prequel trilogy and delayed the sequel trilogy. Initially the films were "The Adventures of Luke Skywalker" before becoming the story of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and later "The Skywalker Saga".
