The film first originated as a project proposed by Willis H. O'Brien originally called King Kong vs. Frankenstein (retitled King Kong vs. Prometheus). O'Brien partnered with independent producer John Beck to seek a studio to fund the project. Every single Hollywood studio turn down the project which would eventually lead Beck to Japan. Toho would purchase the rights and eventually rework the project into the final version of King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962. Beck would obtain the rights to the distribute the film outside of Japan, leading to the 1963 American re-edit of the film.
