Konrad Bercovici sued Sir Charles Chaplin for $6,450,000, claiming the comedian plagiarized the film from a script Bercovici had given him. A settlement was reached in 1947, in which Chaplin paid Bercovici $90,000, plus $5,000 damages. In return, Bercovici acknowledged Chaplin as the sole author of the film and granted him exclusive rights to the screenplay, as well as first option on two of his own stories.
