When Brad Pitts character decides to make a last stand in their disabled tank, literally turning it into a bunker/pillbox and are making preparations to engage the oncoming Germans, he would have brought all the ammunition into the tank that was sitting outside the tank behind the turret before the engagement. It was unrealistic for him not to have done this and instead go outside the tank in the middle of a major fire fight to get the extra ammo.
