Monday, September 29th, 1980 was the night of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962)'s annual anniversary show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson: 18th Anniversary Show (1980). It was ten weeks after the release of this movie, but most Americans had not yet seen it and were not aware of any details, beyond it being some sort of horror film starring Jack Nicholson. That evening, when people tuned in for the show, it did not start off with the normal theme song and visuals, but for no apparent reason there was an immediate cut from the normal "coming up next" bumper to a film sequence. There was Nicholson running with an ax, Shelley Duvall screaming, the ax going through the door, then Nicholson saying the now famous "Heere's Johnny" line, at which time the Tonight Show theme played and the show started. It was one of the funniest moments in the history of television. It also drove another couple of million people to see the movie, giving it an unexpected extended run.
