The show is not a direct adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's books, but instead introduces new stories that are set thousands of years before the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books and movies, inspired by historic references found throughout those books (mainly the appendices). While the Tolkien estate made demands that the series cannot change anything that is written about the age in which it takes place, the showrunners have all the creative freedom to come up with their own ideas. Even though the series is not a direct prequel to Peter Jackson's previous adaptations, Amazon and the showrunners have stated their intent to remain faithful to and consistent with the look and designs of those movies. For that reason, conceptual designer John Howe and special effects company Weta, both instrumental in the look of Jackson's movies, joined the series' design and special effects teams, and Kate Hawley, who had worked on the Hobbit movies, designed the costumes.
