Not long after taking over the part of Inspector Clouseau in this film from Peter Ustinov, Peter Sellers was approached about playing Arthur Simpson in Topkapi (1964). He eventually dropped out of that film and was replaced by Peter Ustinov. Just as Sellers had a huge success in what was originally a Ustinov part, Ustinov had a huge success (and won an Oscar) for what was originally a Sellers part.
