During the casting process various people attached to the production gave interviews claiming they were not casting well-known stars but were searching for unknowns, especially authentic Italians. This led to a massive influx of phone calls, letters, and visits to the production offices at Paramount with people all over America seeking to be part of the movie. Writer Mario Puzo and producer Al Ruddy were the target of many such attempts, and they were often hassled in public by those wanting a part. Even the elite of Hollywood came knocking on their doors. Eventually, almost every part was cast with great actors who were mostly unknowns at the time, with the exception of Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone.
