An early pilot created by Mike Judge, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky focused on two gold-digging women who come to Silicon Valley from LA looking for the next big dot-com billionaire. Network executives were reportedly unhappy with the original pilot, even though they were the ones originally advocating for the female centric angle. Altschuler and Krinsky refused to pivot from the woman's storyline, but HBO was ready to walk away from the project. So Judge continued on while the other two creators left. He then recruited writer-producer Alec Berg to help rethink the series. They then reshot half the pilot.
