The show alters how several of the characters met their ends when compared to the source material, to include: Mike Tedesco, Loraine Hartley, Steve Horn, Ben Edwards, and the unnamed Mexican hitman who had killed Lauren and Lucy. However, the biggest deviation was in how Reece killed Captain Howard. In the show, Captain Howard (vice Mike Tedesco as in the book) was forced by Reece to wear the homemade explosive vest and detonate in the Admiral's office, killing them both. The book had Reece abduct Captain Howard while he was hiding with his family in the Florida Keys. Once abducted, Reece took the Captain to a small deserted island, sliced open his abdomen causing his guts to spill-out, then pinned his intestines to a tree trunk with a knife, and forced him to start walking around the tree. When the Captain finally collapsed, Reece left him (still) alive for the crabs, rats and mosquitos to consume until he eventually succumbed to his wounds.
