There are many references to The Lord of the Rings trilogy in this movie. When Shrek gives Fiona her ring, it comes from the flames and magically slips onto her finger, the words "I love you" then appear on the ring, glowing and in the same Elvish font from The Lord of the Rings. It is also done in the same cinematic angle. The Poison Apple tavern is meant to tip the hat to the inn (The Prancing Pony) seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Also, in Shrek (2001), the mountain where Fiona is held in the castle closely resembles the volcano in Mordor, Mount Doom.
