When Fritz Lang was visiting the U.S, in 1924 for the premiere of I Nibelunghi: Sigfrido (1924), he had his initial inspiration for "Metropolis" when he saw the New York skyline. He tasked his wife Thea von Harbou to write the novel, and they later collaborated on the screenplay.
