It's been noted in several places, but no definitive answer has been determined, that there are suspicious similarities between this film and Anthony Mann's "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (1964). The struggle for Commodus to take over as emperor for his father is based on history. But the love affair between Lucilla and the dashing hero, and the rivalry between him and Commodus, is not. The final duel between them is also not historical, and is too close to be just coincidental.
