Considering how unavoidably dark, serious and graphically intense the entire series run is, it's totally understandable that the series has many episodes written and directed as dark knowingly "meta" comedy episodes, to give the production team, cast and audience a chance to break the tension from the often bleak and graphic plots, especially considering the long production process across 15 seasons and over 330 hour long episodes. The change in music cues give a good indication of those episodes intended to be humorous.
