Revenge (1990) is similar to Top Gun (1986), also directed by Tony Scott. At the start of Revenge, Kevin Costner is a Navy pilot assigned to NAS El Centro and pilots an F-14 Tomcat, just like Tom Cruise did in Top Gun. He and his RIO (radar intercept officer) are "flat-hatting" across the desert near the Mexican border. This is not uncommon as there are several large gunnery ranges between the US and Mexico the military uses for training.
