When in actuality, Andy Griffith based Mayberry on Pilot Mountain, North Carolina and Mount Pilot is based on Mount Airy, North Carolina. Both Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain are in Surry County, North Carolina. Pilot Mountain being a very small town (approximately 1,600 people) and Mount Airy being a much larger town (approximately 10,200 people) than Pilot Mountain.
