At the film's opening battle, The Crater, the Confederates fight black Union soldiers. These units were designated United States Colored Troops, black soldiers led by white officers. These Colored Troops were part of the Union's 4th Division, 9th Corps. Originally they had drilled to be the the first to enter the breach caused by the Crater. However, a last minute change in orders caused them to be among the last to enter. There was fear that, if the black troops went in first and suffered heavy casualties it would lead to a political scandal. The Colored Troops suffered over 400 killed in the battle. Confederate troops were enraged to find they were fighting black troops and there were many scenes of black troops being tortured and executed after they had surrendered.
