General Reginald Dyer, the "Butcher of Amritsar", retired from service without receiving punishment of any kind. Parliament voted 247 to 37 to condemn Dyer's actions. As for the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, at least 379 were killed and over 1,000 were wounded. The British government took responsibility, providing compensation of the modern amount of approximately £1,500 per victim.A substantial number of Britons believed that the massacre was justified. A fund was set up by a cadre of imperialists which presented Dyer with the modern equivalent of £1.1 million. He used this to buy a farm and then a house in Bristol, where he passed away in 1927 at the age of 62.
