Vittorio Gassman did not perform the free-standing handstand on the beach according to an "Internazionale" article (Italian magazine, August 14, 2015) on the film. The stunt was done by someone named Giorgio Lami. He is/was the cousin of Edda Lami who worked as a lifeguard on the beach at the time of filming. Gassman only did the close-up most likely with someone or something holding his legs up as his elbows were never locked.
