The character of John Munch is a massive conspiracy theorist and liberal, which is often a source of amusement throughout the series. Actor Richard Belzer, who plays the role, is not so extreme in his beliefs, but has claimed to be a conspiracy theorist himself and even authored a number of non-fiction books on conspiracy theories, mainly the JFK assassination. In John Munch's earliest character appearances during the Baltimore-based television series Homicide, Life on the Street (1993), Munch is not so much a conspiracy theorist as he is cynical; the development over time and between multiple television shows of this particular character is often used for comic relief. For example, at one point characters Fin and Elliot get Munch to dress up as a paranoid hobo carrying a Bible and shouting about government conspiracies (in order to attract the attention of two teenage thugs who enjoy bashing the homeless).
