Director Mario Monicelli stated in an interview that at time of filming Totò still wasn't really used to cinema: he was a stage guy and was used to different timetables and settings. He didn't like filming in exteriors and was annoyed by the long filming breaks under sun or rain. Monicelli stated also that when he directed him again in 1960 in Risate di gioia he was much more familiar with cinema.
