Despite being based on the same source material, there are major differences between the 2013 film and this show: The film takes place 17 years after departure, the show 7 years Mason, the character played by Tilda Swinton in the film, is split into two characters for the series, Ruth and Melanie. Melanie is "the voice of the train", while Ruth is more hands-on, visiting the tail and conducting the executions there. Unlike the film, Mr. Wilford is not on the train, and hasn't been since its departure. Melanie is the real "leader" and pretends that Mr. Wilford is on the train until her lie is exposed during season 1. She claims she left him behind on departure. Melanie claims that she designed the train and the engine, not Mr. Wilford. While she certainly exhibits engineer skills and knowledge, the events of the season one finale cast doubts on her versions of the departure events. There is more than one train. The season one finale introduces a second train, called "Big Alice", referred to as a "supply train", with Mr. Wilford on board. The cars appear to be substantially bigger than Snowpiercer's.
