Costume designer Robert Fletcher was asked to redesign existing costumes and create new ones. Nicholas Meyer did not like the Starfleet uniforms from either the television series or the first film and wanted them changed, but for budgetary reasons, they could not be discarded entirely. Crimson uniforms were introduced, and naval-inspired designs. They were used in all Star Trek films until 1996.
