The Kazon, the archenemy tribe from the first two seasons, were modeled after Los Angeles street gangs, but were poorly received by viewers, who regarded them as weaker imitations of the Klingons. They were written out of the series after the early part of season three (but continued to appear in flashbacks and dreams), and were mentioned in Star Trek: Voyager: Mortal Coil (1997) as being unworthy of assimilation by the Borg.
