On the commentary, the theory of whether or not Rob and Beth survive at the end comes up. Matt Reeves feels that their fates are ancillary to the efforts Rob goes through just to get to her. Because they are together in that last moment of the film and that they say to each other, "I love you" is the whole point of the story. It doesn't matter if they live or die in that moment. They are together.
