Gaston's unrequited love for Belle in the film was intended as a satire of "love at first sight". As Gaston explains to his sidekick, Gaston fell for her during their first chance encounter. His love is based purely on his admiration of her unique appearance, and does not take into account that they have no shared interests or personality traits.
