According to Rutger Hauer, there was originally a scene of Thomas and Martha Wayne's funeral planned with an entire graveyard set up for the shoot. However, the weather was uncooperative with heavy wind and rain making the outside set unable to shoot much footage. Christopher Nolan then decided to shoot a scene taking place right after the implied funeral once the rain had passed.
