While on a location-scout for the film in Nepal, director Baltasar Kormákur and the film's cinematographer Salvatore Totino were stranded on a mountaintop for a couple of hours after their helicopter didn't turn up. They only had one helicopter to ferry people up, so they were left with a bottle of oxygen while the pilot went to bring more people. In a very unfortunate turn of events, there was no oxygen in the bottle and both men became sick very quickly. In the end though, the helicopter came and got them and all was well.
