The producers had an extremely difficult time casting the Skipper. Many actors, including Carroll O'Connor auditioned, but could not bring the right combination of gruffness and sympathy to the role. Sherwood Schwartz almost gave up, before finding and auditioning Alan Hale Jr. who ultimately brought the perfect blend to the role. In an interview after Alan Hale had passed away, his widow Naomi Hale stated "He was born to play the Skipper".
