In the extended version, just before Josh tells Susan the truth that he is actually 13, he returns to the neighborhood where his family lives. If he had been spotted by his mother, the police could had arrested him for his own kidnapping. Not believing Josh's claim that he is Josh Baskin, he could had been put in a mental hospital. His claim that he is Josh and about the Zoltar machine would had been dismissed as a delusion, and Josh's family might have concluded that Josh could be dead.
