Vincent D'Onofrio heard of the auditions for the film from Matthew Modine. Using a rented video camera and dressed in army fatigues, he recorded his audition for the part of Private Pyle. At the time, D'Onofrio was working as a bouncer in a club, and had only acted in a few projects, so he didn't expect much from the audition. In fact, when director Stanley Kubrick and his assistant called him about the role, D'Onofrio hung up, thinking someone was pulling a prank on him. On their second call, they were able to convince him that they were the real thing, and that they were genuinely interested in him. D'Onofrio later said that he owes his career to Kubrick casting him in the film.
