After six seasons, the show's ratings had dropped. Incoming NBC entertainment president Warren Littlefield was looking to back away from series that catered to older audiences. He cancelled both Matlock and L'ispettore Tibbs (1988). Andy Griffith and the producers managed to move over to ABC, suggesting to them the show could move, filming to North Carolina (which was closer to Andy Griffith's home) and save money on production. The show ran three more seasons before being cancelled permanently in 1995.
